What is a Knox Box?
A Knox Box is a small, heavy-duty key box mounted on the outside of your building. It holds your keys and access cards, and only the local fire department has the master key to open it. That way, if there's an alarm or emergency when no one's on-site, firefighters can get in fast — instead of forcing a door and causing thousands in damage.
Do I actually need one?
Most likely, yes. Under International Fire Code Section 506 — adopted across Texas — the fire marshal can require a key box wherever access to a building (or an area within it) is restricted by locked doors and immediate access is necessary for life safety. In practice, that covers most commercial buildings with after-hours locking, alarm monitoring, or gated access. It's one of the most common items flagged during inspections and certificate-of-occupancy reviews.
How do I get a Knox Box?
Here's the part that surprises people: you can't just buy one off the shelf. Knox boxes are keyed to each individual fire department, so they must be ordered through your local department's authorization. The steps:
- Confirm the requirement and the approved model with your fire marshal (mounting location and height vary by jurisdiction).
- Order the box through your fire department's authorization.
- Have it professionally mounted to the department's spec.
- Put your current keys, fobs, and access cards inside.

What about my gate?
